The “Reimagining Tijuana” project is a celebration of children's vision using artificial intelligence. The drawings of 5 Tijuana children who shared their vision of the Tijuana they hoped to see in the future were animated, as a testimony of how technology can transform dreams into palpable realities that inspire.
Daniel Bautista, creative, designer and animator of the project, suggested that, using artificial intelligence, we could bring to life the drawings of five children from Tijuana. These children, with sincere visions of the future, became the protagonists of a project that sought to transform their dreams into interactive visual experiences.
“Going into the campaign was a trip to the near future with many obstacles. A group of children handed us their drawings where they imagined the Tijuana of the future. How to turn their primitive works of art into sophisticated videos that would teach them that that future, perhaps, could be a reality?
Depending on the pictorial quality of the drawing, we followed different paths, in some we drew some elements so that the Runway could better understand the reference in the real world. After all, this digital monster is fueled by the clichés and conventions of society, and a small detour causes the process to take us to shapeless, indecipherable places, more similar to Lovecraftian creatures than to humans with faces, bicycles, bridges, buildings or flying cars.
In another case, the first thing was for the original drawings to be converted into more detailed drawings with the PICTURE-TO-PICTURE tool, and once he obtained a “better” image, ask him to convert it to video. If it didn't work, adjustments were made.”
The magic of the project, which is part of the Innovative Tijuana campaign, Reimagining Tijuana, a means to promote Innovative Tijuana's citizen participation workshops, which use the Citizen Design Thinking™ methodology, lies in how we turn children's simple ideas into impressive visual representations.
The drawings were entered on the platform used with textual descriptions of what the children said. Every drawing, every stroke, was interpreted and expanded by AI to create a dynamic visual experience. The children were able to see their ideas materialized in a renewed and vibrant Tijuana, a testament to the potential that new generations have to shape the future of their city.
“We are faced with a phenomenon that could be a wonderful mechanism for reflecting and reformulating what makes art art; human, human. That question that we answer at times and send to the bottom of our consciousness, for when it is necessary to renew the answer, the time has come.”
Daniel Bautista
With each cartoon and each visual experience created, we seek to contribute to a renewed Tijuana full of possibilities, with an ethical use of new technologies that contribute to the collaboration and community of our region, influencing children to take advantage of technological tools to visualize their dreams and inspire them to create an impact thanks to their best ideas.
